How to order our coffee shop kopi & Teh

Unique taste of our local (Asian aka Nanyang) kopi and Tea

Just like gourmet coffee & tea, our local drinks have their uniqueness and varieties.

Local Kopi and Teh are brewed in batches as concentrate, hot water is added to make different level of aroma and our local humble drinks can have it your way with different level of sweetness too 

The coffee beans used for local kopi are Robusta beans roasted with sugar and margarine under high heat to caramelised the beans and for the flavour.

Normal Kopi is sweeten with condensed milk and no sugar is used

Kopi O is coffee black with sugar

For those who loves cream – with goes with Kopi C, where Evaporated milk is used and sugar to add for sweetness. ( no condensed milk)

 

This goes same for makicarnation milk or Evaporated Milk we used for our local Kopi and Tehng the Teh.

If you are a non-local, you might get puzzled with the name of our humble local drinks called Kopi and Teh

Fun facts and knowing the terms. 

Some might have other versions to the origin languages, here in Singapore, we are multi-racial and that is uniquely us. We share and we embraced.

Knowing term to have your desired cup of kopi and teh can be fun. 

Kopi & Teh these are from Malay language 

Siew Dai is less sweet , from Chinese Hock Chew dialect

Gah Dai is more sweet, from Chinese Hock Chew dialect

Kosong – is empty in Malay language, however for drink is means no sugar just plain.

“C” referred to Kopi/Teh with generous amount of Evaporated Milk. Why C? Some said C refer to fresh in Chinese Hainanese dialect, Some said C is Carnation Milk which is the pioneer brand of Evaporated Milk.   

Gao is thick, refer to the kopi with more concentrated kopi and less water add. Gao From Chinese, Hokkien dialect. 

Po is lighter, less concentrate kopi with more water added. Gao from Chinese Hokkien dialect

Di Lo is concentrated no water added, is like expresso. Di Lo from Chinese Hokkien dialect

Peng is Iced, simply added ice to your kopi – From Chinese Hokkien dialect.

So how we order? If our preference is not the normal kopi or teh

What is normal? 

For taste: 2/3 concentrated kopi to 1/3 hot water with condensed milk is 1.5 teaspoon

Types of Kopi 

Kopi, Kopi C & Kopi O

Types of Teh

Teh, Teh C & Teh O

Level of Aroma 

Gao, 3/4 concentrated kopi to 1/4 hot water. 

Po, Around 50:50

Di Lo, Full concentrate

Level of Sweetness 

Siew dai, 1 teaspoon

Siew siew dai, 1/2 teaspoon

Ga dai,  2 teaspoons

Kosong, no sugar

Note – concentrate & sweetness may varies from stalls to stalls on their skill of brew 

How to order if your preference from Normal one.

1. If you want just different sweetness level

Type + sweetness 

Example : Kopi siew dai  = Kopi less sweet

2. If you want stronger kopi with less sugar 

Type + Aroma + Sweetness

Example: Kopi Gao siew dai = Stronger Kopi less sweet

With ice 

Ice Kopi – Kopi Peng

Ice Teh – Teh Peng
